Founded in 1976, The Futon Shop is one of the largest eco-friendly retail trendsetters in the nation. All futon mattresses are made with domestically produced soy-based foam.

Within the last couple of years, the Futon Shop’s line of futon mattresses — made with soy-based foam – is one of the company’s biggest sellers. The soy-based foam – Preserve — is manufactured by Hickory Springs Manufacturing Company in North Carolina.

“The Futon Shop uses only green materials such as soybean foam, organic cotton, double-tempered recycled steel, and chemical-free latex,” explains The Futon Shop Founder and CEO Suzanne Diamond. “We’re not only proud of our commitment to the environment, but our efforts to reduce dependence on foreign oil and support American jobs.”

The United Soybean Board (USB) funded research that helped lead to the development of soy-based foam. The foam manufacturing process involves a reaction between petroleum-based polyols and other petro chemicals. Soy polyols can be substituted for a portion of petroleum polyols. Soy-based foam provides the same quality, comfort and durability as petroleum-based foam, with the added benefits of being made from a renewable resource and better for the environment.

Diamond created the first hand-made Japanese style cotton futon in Boston as a student at the Boston Museum School of fine arts. She was influenced by Michio Kushi, a Japanese natural healer who taught her the health benefits of sleeping on natural fibers instead of polyurethane foam, which is typically used in mattresses.

What is a futon?

1) What's inside a futon?

The word Futon originates from Japan; it actually means a complete bed unit ( shikibuton, futon and kakibuton.)
Many Eastern cultures sleep lower to the ground, while the Japanese named this style of bedding, the Futon. The Japanese sleep with a tatami mat or flooring, giving their cotton as well as cotton and wool mattresses breathing ability, their futons are thin so they can roll them up and store the futon in the closet during the day. The western cultures in the 70’s picked up this eastern tradition of sleeping on all natural fibers.

2)The Futon Shop’s history marks key points following the era of the Futon Frame time line. In 1980, William Brower a Boston architect who enjoyed working in wood, designed a beautiful black walnut hardwood futon frame that folded in three parts. This futon frame was displayed in the Arts and Craft museum next to the Museum of Modern Art in New York City.The Futon Shop has been specializing in futon mattresses since 1976. Their futon mattresses all have the main ingredient, cotton.

You may pick from medium grade cotton, staple cotton, or organic cotton.

Then there are other options all depending on your comfort style. We have firm, medium, and soft: soy foams, springs, and individually pocketed coils, and latex and wool.

What's inside my mattress?

The Futon Shop has been specializing in futon mattresses since 1976. Their futon mattresses all have the main ingredient, cotton. You may pick from medium grade cotton, staple cotton, or organic cotton.

Will my futon lump?

Futons have come a long way. Ten to fifteen years ago, futon mattresses did not have any foam core and the cotton options were limited. Most shops selling futon mattresses presently do not know what kind of cotton is inside their mattresses, and they just sell low price futon mattresses. You get the mattress home and within a few months your mattress has slid half way down your frame, has a huge dip where you have been sitting or laying, and your futon mattress is lumpy around the whole futon.

The Futon Shop has been specializing in manufacturing futon mattresses since 1976, and they have improved their futon mattresses, by finding the best green and organic fibers to give you the best quality in your futon mattress and for your platform bed.

The Futon Shop has found Staple cotton to be the best quality cotton to avoid lumpiness for their futon mattresses. Low-grade cotton has short fibers, which do not hold the moisture for very long and tend to break and become a lumpy futon mattress. Top grade Staple cotton has the strongest strands taken from the top of the cotton plant. 100% staple cotton futons therefore resist forming balls or lumps and give futons a longer life expectancy.

The Futon Shop uses the best quality long fiber staple cotton for 90% of their futon mattresses. You can choose from over 15 futon mattresses with Wool, Latex , Organic , Soy foam, Soy memory foam Latex and for your platform bed or futon sofa sleeper frame.

Why get wool in my futon mattress?

The Futon Shop adds Virgin Wool to our futon mattresses for a cushier, softer feel; the light fluffy wool fiber has a crimped construction that acts like a spring. We use naturally long crimp wool grown in the United States that does not have to be artificially crimped. Also, wool wicks away moisture resulting in a longer lasting futon mattress. Wool fibers are naturally long and crimped adding softness and spring to the mattress. Wool blended futons are considered a higher quality futon for 3 main reasons:

1. Wool fibers don’t hold moisture the way cotton does, the moisture is instead wicked away.
2. The longer fibers, when blended with cotton, result is a stronger, more comfortable, and more durable futon.
3. A wool futon, with proper ventilation, will help to regulate temperature.

Why get Memory Foam in my Futon Mattress?

If you have ever slept or sat on anything memory foam, you will know right away why our memory foam mattresses have been our hottest items. These memory foam futon mattresses cradle your back while you sit and while you rest on your futon couch.

The Futon Shop is the only futon retailer in California that manufactures memory foam as well as all their foams in any of our mattresses with the least amount of polyurethane.

These futon mattresses also support your spine as you sleep, leaving you with a rested feel when you wake up in the morning. The memory foam has been proven to be best suited for side sleepers because these kind of sleepers need extra support for their hips and shoulders. It also supports side sleepers because it is the most supportive for your spine as you lie all your weight on your futon mattress. The memory foam slowly compresses and then slowly bounces back to its original shape, while gently comforting your joints and muscles as you sleep. 4) What mattress is the best if I have back problems?

There is no single mattress style or type that works for all people back. Although any mattress that helps someone sleep without pain and stiffness is the best mattress for that individual. A good mattress should provide back support for the natural curves and alignment of the spine. The right amount of back support also helps you avoid muscle soreness in the morning. While there is not much clinical data about mattresses, one study found that medium-firm mattresses usually provide more back pain relief than firm mattresses.

Overall comfort while sleeping on the mattress is equally important as sufficient back support. Sleeping on a mattress that is too firm can cause aches and pains on pressure points. A medium-firm mattress may be more comfortable because it allows the shoulder and hips to sink in slightly.

If an old mattress sags visibly in the middle or is no longer comfortable, it is probably time to purchase a new one. Putting boards under a sagging mattress to keep it from sagging in the middle is only a short-term fix for the sagging; a new mattress is still needed.

Firm or Soft? What is better? Which will last longer?

Comfort is different for everyone. Some love a soft bed or futon mattress, while others can’t sleep on anything harder than a brick. But what is constant among all ingredients: Staple cotton and latex.
These are the two ingredients you should have in your mattress for the longest lasting effect. We have plenty of futon mattresses that are firm and soft, but through and through Latex is the most durable core you can put in your mattress. And Staple cotton, whether it is organic or not will help your futon mattress avoid lumping, breaking, or dipping.

5) What if I want a firm futon Mattress, but I do not want any foam because of "off-gassing"?

Could I put my new Futon Mattress on my box spring mattress or on the floor?

That would not be advisable. Futon mattresses have cotton as their main ingredient and they all need slatted bed frames or futon frames. This also applies with no flat wood or use of your futon mattress on the floor. If you do lay your futon mattress on the above, mold will occur inside your mattress.

And your futon mattress will get very heavy from moisture not being released, leaving your futon mattress left with moisture soaking in the cotton and breaking your cotton fibers decreasing the lifespan of your futon mattress.

Today The Futon Shop is introducing guest Blogger, Brian Donohoo, President and CEO of Strata Furniture, the company that brought the zero tolerance Wall Hugger futon mechanism to the futon industry. This mechanism allows you to open and close the futon easily without moving the frame and mattress from the wall.

Strata Furniture is the only futon frame company that makes a true wall hugger futon. Place the frame next to the wall and the front loading mechanism allows you to convert the frame from sofa to bed quickly and easily.
In addition unlike typical futons, this wall hugging property allows you to convert your wall hugger futon between it's sofa and bed state at will without scratching or denting your walls.

Brian gives a brief history of Strata Furniture:

Strata Furniture started in 2000. Our mission was and is to provide state of the art frames combined with quality craftsmanship, exceptional customer service and creative marketing materials.

All of our designs incorporate our patented wall hugger front loading mechanism. We wanted to design unique and functional futon frames not known in the industry at that time. Our first line of frames was designed with a finished back that stays in place even when the frame is unfolded.

Our initial designs were inspired by Shaker furniture and mission styles resulting in the Mission Rim frame

which was our first frame in the marketplace. We followed up with another mission style frame called the Addison. The interesting thing about this design was that it was suggested to us by one of our retail customers. Our next two designs, the Orion and Adriana, were designed to add a modern contemporary and a traditional design to our product lineup. All but the Adriana are still in production reflecting their timeless appeal. The Adriana was a well-received frame; we would continue to sell it if we could find a manufacturer willing to make this complicated frame.

After success with our frames with the finished back, called the Signature collection, Strata Furniture felt that we could come up with unique designs to compete in the traditional futon frame category. Our design aim was to introduce designs that are unique to the market place and not sold by other companies. This resulted in a line of frames called the Carriage collection. We wanted variety and started with four designs, the Dillon, Lexington, Lambton and Flair. The Dillon is our armless low profile frame great for tight spaces, kids gaming rooms, dens as well as more spacious rooms. It also allows the cove

to be the focal point which permits the customer to emphasize their design style. We always liked the sleigh style in the futon arm but wanted one with more graceful styling, resulting in the Lexington. We accomplished this by extending the curve on the top of the arm and then adding a large curve at the bottom. The Lambton was designed to be our mission style arm but wanted to add some unique characteristics, including slightly curved interlacing slats and grooves on the arm cap. Our Flair frame incorporates features of the sleigh design but with a very dramatic look using curved slats.

When we design a product, considerable attention is given to the details resulting in beautiful, functional frames. We want our frames to look different from anything in the market. Our goal is to make the futon frame look like a traditional piece of furniture. Therefore our arm heights are higher to be in proportional to the mattresses sold today. We try to incorporate design aspects such as hidden hardware, distinctive finishes and details found in classical furniture.

Most of our designs are created in-house. They are inspired by all sorts of things. For instance our Plantation frame was based on plantation shutters. We also receive many design ideas from our customers. We are very open and happy to receive their ideas.

Bringing a new arm to market is a long process, starting with sketches, detailed drawings and building of samples with multiple variations. Everyone in the company has input and feedback. Finally a manufacturing sample is made and finished and we decide if it is consistent with our standards. If so, off to market.

Off gassing from polyurethane foam, releases many harmful petroleum chemicals. The Petroleum based chemicals used in making foam are polymers and urethane, which contains an Isocyanate compound. The Isocyanate compound is one of the main culprits that causes illness, asthma and other diseases.

Instead: if foam is necessary for your comfort level and you have to have it, try such alternatives such as soy-foam.

What does “Greening your home” mean? The first thing is you should ask what is green design and why should I green my home? CBS News opened the conversation regarding green design

in their article “40 who paved the way for the green revolution”. One of the top Green Furniture pioneers mentioned was William Mcdonough, the

prominent architect, along with chemist Michael Braungart, who encouraged manufacturers to redesign products for efficiency and recyclability. When looking into green design, there are numerous fronts opening, regarding the food we eat, the cars we drive, the clothes we wear, and the bed we sleep in. Greening your home has become the biggest trend, but what does it mean? And why as a consumer, should you care?

Suzanne Diamond, the owner of The Futon Shop helps explain the principles behind the subject of Greening your Home.

Q: Suzanne, how did you start The Futon Shop?
Suzanne: Thirty-five years ago I was an art student at the Boston Museum School of Fine Arts making futon mattresses on the floor by hand with just natural products: cotton, and wool. My philosophy of natural living came from a macrobiotic teacher, Michio Kushi, a reknown Japanese teacher, who taught the health benefits of sleeping on natural fibers instead of polyurethane foam. In the 70’s, consumers found our products by word of mouth throughout the natural food movement. This demographic group were looking for natural fibers for the health of their bodies inside and out. By the 80’s, William Bower, a Boston Architect who enjoyed working in wood, designed a black walnut hardwood futon frame that folded in three parts. It was displayed in the arts and crafts Museum next to the Museum of Modern art in New York City.

We decided this was a great way to introduce futons, not just as a traditional bed mattress, but also as a space saving functional couch that converts into a bed. After this futon couch was developed and the mattresses became more popular by word of mouth, these simple practices of natural living ended up coinciding with the trend of green living throughout the decades, leading to our eleven retail location and selling to more than two million green consumers.

Q: What makes Futons from the Futon Shop more green than a traditional mattress?

Suzanne: one of the biggest differences between our mattresses and traditional mattresses is the organic components. The Futon Shop uses only green and organic materials in their mattresses. As a member of the Organic Consumer’s Association, The Futon Shop takes pride in knowing that there are no synthetic chemicals in our Organic cotton. Organic agriculture is the only form of agriculture practiced on the planet that creates soil fertility and does not deplete soil nutrients. This method of soil fertility utilizes only renewable resources that do not pollute the environment and that foster biological activities within the soil. Other companies that use polyurethane do not coincide with The Futon shop’s goal of sustainable manufacturing, because they do not use renewable practices, they use oil and energy; therefore, creating more carbon footprint and creating more fossil fuel. The Futon Shop takes great pride in being an innovator in manufacturing and encouraging their consumers to think about using less waste and chemicals into the environment.

Q: What about the wood that is used for your platform beds and futons couch frames?

Suzanne: According to the Sustainable furnishing council, which we are a member of, home furnishing manufacturers are one of the top three consumers of wood in the world. Deforestation is a major problem for our planet and many companies do not use green options when manufacturing their furniture. The Futon Shop on the other hand, uses plantation grown hardwoods including rubber wood for their platform beds and futon sofa frames. The way the rubber tree plantation works is the sap from the rubber tree is used, but once the sap is dried out, the tree must be taken out and a new tree must be planted. The trees are recycled and every frame we sell is not contributing to the disaster of deforestation.

Q: Are there other sustainable and green products that you have in your products?

Suzanne: We use top quality Bonnel springs, which are strong recycled steel. This recycled steel is tested according to rigorous standards, and offers a green alternative to traditional mattresses on the market. We also have green bedding, as well as a new Organic baby line.

Q: I have heard that your business is local, is that another way that your business is sustainable and green?

Suzanne: We are a member of made in SF, which is an organization for San Francisco local manufactures. Yes, we have been a locally San Francisco based factory, solely manufacturing organic and green products since 1976. According to the SFC
(Sustainable Furniture Council), conservation is a major shortcoming when it comes to most furniture businesses in America. There are countless importing and exporting companies which increase the carbon footprint. The Futon Shop is a local manufacturer, which does not import their futon mattresses.

Q: Why should consumers go green?

Suzanne:
I believe that consumers when aware of their choices, they often choose to go green because they want a better life as well as a better future for their children and their future. The Futon Shop and many other companies and organizations have been coming together to inform consumers how to make a difference and change the way the world is going. 1) Certified sustainable wood Whether a piece of furniture is made from wood, cloth, metal, plastic, or whatever else, there are earth-friendly options. Simply put, don't mess with the trees. There are sustainable ways to harvest wood, however. 2) Bamboo
You've probably heard by this point that bamboo isn't a tree at all, but a grass. Bamboo represents a family of grasses that range in size from tiny to huge, and in color from lime green to maroon stripes. It is incredibly fast-growing and versatile and has become the unofficial poster material of environmental designers and builders. Bamboo can be flattened into flooring, molded into furniture, pressed into veneers, sliced up to make window blinds, or hey, you can just build your whole house out of it. Using bamboo in buildings earns architects and builders LEED points. Most bamboo comes from China and is grown with few of no pesticides. Because it is so fast growing, it is much easier to maintain healthy bamboo forests. This also means it uses a lot of water, however, and harvesting too fast can deplete soil fertility. Some growers do use pesticides and other chemical inputs, however, so keep that in mind. But for the most part, bamboo is one of the greenest materials around.

3) Recycled/recyclable metal and plastic
Since both metal and plastic are recyclable, at least in theory, these can be considered eco-friendly materials for furniture. More and more furniture is being made from recycled plastics and metals as well, like the recycled aluminum. Recycled materials require less processing and fewer resources, and help support the market for recycled materials. Technologies are always improving, meaning that recycled plastics and metals are always going up in quality.

4) Low-toxicity furniture
When you buy a piece of furniture, bring it home, and set it down in a room, it doesn't just sit there. No matter what it's made out of, chances are, it's offgassing (or releasing substances into the air). Almost everything offgasses, which isn't necessarily bad, but synthetic materials or those treated with synthetic substances can offgas chemicals which are toxic. Volatile organic compounds, or VOCs, are the most common family of chemicals that are offgassed and have been linked to birth defects, endocrine disruption, and cancer. Flame retardants and formaldehyde are common VOCs offgassed by furniture. Especially if your home or office is well-insulated (which it should be for energy purposes) toxins can't get out easily. In fact, studies have shown that air quality inside your house is often worse than outside. Everyone should be conscious of the kinds of chemicals they bring home, but especially if you have kids, pets, or other family members who are low to the ground and prone to licking things. There are some good ways to help maintain good indoor air quality when it comes to furniture choices. Also, look for furniture that is untreated or treated with natural substances, like natural wood finishes, or naturally tanned leather. Organic cotton is also less likely to be treated with toxic stuff. Another great way to dodge toxic chemicals is to buy furniture that is vintage or second-hand and has already done most of its offgassing (just make sure it doesn't carry anything worse, like lead paint).

6) Buy local

History of The Futon Shop

1976 - Suzanne Diamond made the first hand-made Japanese style cotton futon in Boston as a student at the Boston Museum School of fine arts. Michio Kushi a reknown macrobiotic teacher suggested the health benefits of sleeping on natural fibers instead of polyurethane foam. Futons are lightweight easy and portable. Artie Diamond purchased the staple cotton and wool for the futons and Suzanne hand–made them with a friend Maya Edwards. These futons were made in all sizes from twin, full, queen and king to also accommodate custom sizes and these futons are suggested for use directly on the floor without a frame. The thinness of the handmade futon made it ideal for rolling up for storage during the day.

1977-1979 - Artie and Suzanne Diamond moved to Los Angeles California in 1976 and continued to make hand made Japanese style futons for customers in the Los Angeles area. The Diamonds were part of the beginning of the health food and healthy and alternative lifestyle of the mid 1970’s. Artie worked for Erewon Health Food Stores, organic produce farmers and they manufactured natural cotton clothing as well futons. The futons were mostly sold by word of mouth within the natural food movement. The customers buying futons wanted natural fibers on and around there bodies as well as organic food in there bodies.

1979 - The Diamonds moved to San Francisco and opened the first official store selling futons to the general public in San Anselmo California called The Futon Shop (TFS). This was the first official futon store in America. Suddenly the spirit of natural fibers was gaining in popularity and futons started to become more mainstream bedding.

1980 - William Brower a Boston architect who enjoyed working in wood, designed a beautiful black walnut hardwood futon frame that folded in three parts. This futon frame was displayed in the Arts and Craft museum next to the Museum of Modern Art in New York City. The Diamonds started offering these frames in Bebinga, black walnut and warm cherry to the general public in California. The Diamond’s opened there first futon showroom selling futon mattresses and futon frames in San Rafael California. So many Californians wanted futons that the Diamond’s opened a factory in Corte Madera California.

1981 - Around the same period of time Peter Kloos a wine barrel maker (copper) who lived in Napa Valley made on of the first American made Pine folding and flat futon frame in a few different styles. Peter originally from Amsterdam, worked in a beautiful stone building In the heart of Napa Valley. He is still there with his family and has a furniture store in downtown Napa.

1980 - The Diamond’s expanded there futon stores to Berkeley and San Francisco selling William Brower hardwood futon frames and Peter Kloos’s pine futon frames and platform beds as well as there very special all natural hand-made futons.

1981 - The Futon Shop was so busy that a new factory was opened in the mission of San Francisco and the Diamonds had over 30 employees. There futon and frame line was expanded on to include a larger variety of futons and futon sofa bed frames, natural fiber futon, futon frames and washable cotton slip covers where all manufactured in Boston and California.

1982 - The Futon Shop continued to expend operations the Diamond’s opens a 2nd futon store in San Francisco and opened more stores in Palo Alto and Fremont California.

1983 - The Diamond’s opened another futon store in Albany California and Oakland California.

1984-1991 - By 1991 the Diamond’s had opened a total of 22 futon stores in California from Los Angeles to Sacramento. Still manufacturing quality futon mattresses right here in San Francisco.

1992 - The Futon Shop purchased a felt Garnett Machine to process wool cotton and all natural fillings for their futons. This machine allowed them to purchased organic and natural cotton and wool from local American farmers and supported greater control of quality and consistency of their futon mattresses.

1993-1995 - The Futon Shop opened 3 franchise stores in Tallahassee, Ft. Walton Beach and Jacksonville Florida and a 800 square foot franchise futon store in a shopping mall in the heart of Singapore.

1993 - The futon industry continue to grow and the Diamond’s launched a wholesale division with their futon mattresses farm their San Francisco manufacturing plant.

1994-1997 - The Futon Shop became frustrated with the poor quality of the futon frames that were available so they purchased there own woodworking oak factory and manufactured Solid American made Oak futon frames from Southern California.

1998 - The Futon Shop was invited to partner with JETCO Japanese Economic Trade Commission to introduce American futons to the Japanese public and wholesale agents. The Diamond’s shipped their 1st container of futons to Tokyo, Japan.

2000-2007 - Through the ups and down of the 90’s and into the 21st century the Diamond’s continued to innovate and make the best quality natural futon bedding for over 2 million happy customers throughout the world. The Futon Shop still manufactures and offers 24 quality futon mattress in 8 sizes, hundreds of washable and removable futon covers, folding foam beds, and a huge selection of futon frames.

2008 - The Futon Shop introduces Soy-based foams into all their hand-made mattresses. The Diamond’s still believe in natural fibers and natural living in all areas of their lives. From 1976 onwards the Diamond’s have promoted natural futons and proudly offer them at their 11 retail stores, and through selected retailers.

10,000 years ago, in the Neolithic period, people began sleeping on primitive "beds."
3400 BCE. Egyptian pharaohs discover the benefits of raising a pallet off the earth. King Tutankahmen had a bed of ebony and gold. Common people slept on palm bows heaped in the corner of their home.
Roman Empire. First luxury bed. Often decorated with gold, silver or bronze, these beds featured mattresses stuffed with reeds, hay, wool or feathers.
Roman Empire. Romans discover the waterbed. The sleeper would recline in a cradle of warm water until drowsy, then be lifted onto an adjacent cradle with a mattress, where they would be rocked to sleep.
Renaissance. Mattresses were made of pea shucks or straw, sometimes feathers, stuffed into coarse ticks, then covered with sumptuous velvets, brocades and silks.

Louis XIV was inordinately fond of staying in bed, often holding court in the royal bedroom. Reportedly, he owned 413 beds and displayed a special liking for the ultra spacious and ostentatious variety.

16th and 17th centuries. Mattresses were generally stuffed with straw or down, placed atop a latticework of rope.

The late 18th century. Advent of the cast iron bed and cotton mattresses. Together, they provided a sleeping space that was less attractive to bugs. Until that time, assorted vermin were simply accepted as an accepted component of even the most royal beds.
1865. The first coil spring construction for bedding was patented.
1930's. Innerspring mattresses and upholstered foundations became serious contenders for the dominant position they now enjoy in the U.S. and Canada.
1940's. Futons introduced to North America.
1950's. Foam rubber mattresses and pillows appeared on the market.

The expression "sleep tight" comes from the 16th and 17th centuries when mattresses were placed on top of ropes that needed regular tightening.

1960's. Modern waterbed introduced. Adjustable beds become popular with consumers.

1980's. Airbeds introduced.
1990's. Spacious sleeping is once again on the rise. In 1999, the queen-size mattress became America's most popular choice for mattress size – for the first time ever – beating the twin.
2000's. Choice and comfort are key words in contemporary bedding. In addition to an almost unlimited range of innerspring mattress designs, new types of foam mattress cores (such as "memory" or visco-elastic foam and refinements to traditional latex) as well as airbeds, waterbeds and high-tech adjustable sleep sets offer consumers attractive, quality alternatives. Pillowtop mattresses, a popular innovation in luxury, offer an extra layer of soft cushioning, and single-sided no-flip mattresses are common.

Take a Bite of Farm Aid!

We could all use some good news, right about now, couldn’t we? Things are pretty tough out there. While we have a serious message about what family farmers are up against, the truth is Farm Aid is also a celebration. It’s a celebration of the value of family farmers (and their values!) and the solutions they represent for us in terms of our economy, our environment and our health. It’s also about the inspiration family farmers represent and the deeper connection they can help us make every time we eat. And as Willie has said, “We all eat!”

The Farm Aid concert is a chance for us to shine a spotlight on these people who work every day to put good food on our tables. Farm Aid is a way for all of us to meet our farmers, understand the heart and soul they put into their work, the care they have for the land and for our food, and the ways they’re helping to build and strengthen local economies and communities. At Farm Aid folks can shake the calloused hand of a farmer--or in the case of the new young farmers coming on the land, the not-yet-calloused hand! They can meet farmers who have returned from war to farm—trading swords for plowshares. Concertgoers can put their hands into the good dirt that farmers grow—yes, grow—because most soil in this country needs loving care to grow good food, and our farmers are giving that care.

You know, in the divisive world we’re in right now, isn’t it refreshing to step away from all that and rejoice in a basic truth: that good care creates good food that sustains us all? That connection--it's huge! And to see it happen at the Farm Aid concert is a beautiful thing; this being my ninth concert, I've seen alot of it. We’ve got this amazing lineup of artists--Willie Nelson, Neil Young, John Mellencamp, Dave Matthews… and on and on--and a lot of folks come out to see the show, to enjoy the music. But we don’t just let them do that. NO! They get the full-on Farm Aid experience, complete with a little dirt under their fingernails.

They visit our HOMEGROWN Village and get inspired by farmers, they meet city-dwellers making a living from a quarter acre plot downtown, they learn how to plant their own seeds, and then they imagine the bumper crop of tomatoes they’ll have next year as they learn how to preserve the harvest. The conversion is complete when they taste our HOMEGROWN concessions—a BBQ sandwich made with all natural, family farm pork 129 miles down the road from here and a roll baked from Kansas grown wheat, with a sunkissed Missouri peach for dessert.

And that’s it--the next weekend they’re at their local farmers market or they’re looking up their local farmers online. And they’re beginning to understand how supporting our farmers keeps local farms in our regions, and keeps local dollars there too, where they circulate 2-7 times more than they would had they shopped at the national chain store with its headquarters (and profit center) who knows where! It makes us all richer, and I'm not just talking about dollars.

Sadly, in our crazy lives, we don’t think about these things that often. We’re running from here to there, stuffing whatever convenient food in our mouths without considering what’s in it, who made it, under what conditions, who gets paid what, and what it’s doing to our natural resources, our health, our economy. But if we slow down just a little and begin to think about maybe even just one of those facets—after all, if our body is our temple, what is our food? Shouldn’t we think about it just a little? Well, when we do think about it, what joy it can give us. And what good we can do.

Today, when so much seems out of our control, more and more people are taking power back through the decisions they can make about their food. The movement is spreading more and more each day. And, man, it tastes good!

Excellent timing, Cindy. While I can't really touch on allergies or health issues, I think your question on organics is very relevant right now. For many people, organics represents an ideal for agriculture that is deeply connected to the family farmer and his or her desire to grow quality products and care for the land. In fact, family farmers pioneered organic farming. Over time, they built the networks so that they could share information and learn from each other. Those farmer to farmer networks eventually created state certification programs and standards that were then used to create the United States Department of Agriculture Organic Rule, otherwise known as the standards behind the organic label that we see on grocery store shelves.

I think it is important to start with an understanding of what the organic label means according to the USDA, then move on to a discussion of the ideals that are associated with the movement, and then finally explore the current debate over where organic farming is headed. Organic farming considers the farm to be one ecosystem and strives to maximize its health, from the soil to the surrounding wildlife. Specific methods or standards of organic production vary by country and crop but in general the elimination of chemical inputs like petroleum-based fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides and genetically modified organisms is at the core of organic agriculture. Instead, farmers invest in farming techniques like crop rotation, composting, beneficial insects (like ladybugs), and cover crops to promote soil fertility, manage pests, and control weeds. This kind of farming is often more labor intensive and requires significant education and innovation because most chemical shortcuts are prohibited by certification standards.

Tips From The Better Sleep Council

According to an Oklahoma State University Study, a new mattress Provided sleepers with significant improvements, including:

70.8% In Sleep Comfort
62.0% In Sleep Quality
55.3% In Back Pain
50.7% In Spine Stiffness

The Better Sleep Council believes a good amount of people do not get the recommended amount of sleep needed each night to perform their best during the day. When they do not get the necessary amount of sleep needed, the consequences are: difficulty concentrating, irritability, weakened immune system and even higher stress.

The Better Sleep Council recommends the cure is often getting a new mattress. They believe that a new mattress may be what is needed because of a few factors. Quality and the change of your comfort and lifestyle. For example, when pregnant you may need a different comfort because you will have to sleep on your side. If you do get injured, a more firm or soft mattress may be needed. The Better Sleep Council also believes a mattress set of up to seven years may not give the comfort it once provided. An Oklahoma State University rated a study of "Subjective Rating of Medium-Firm Bedding Systems" and their study found that participants with mattresses five years or older reported significant improvements in sleep quality and comfort when sleeping on a mattress, regardless of the sleeper's age or weight.

Sleep: The many issues we all face

Sleep is something we all need. Some need more hours than others in different times in our life, but we all need a good night's rest in order to function in life. I know from personal experience if I do not get a good night's rest, I am sleepy all day, groggy, grumpy, and my body aches. And for some reason, I just want to eat junk food.

I have had trouble sleeping since I was a child. My parent's still complain to this day( Mind you I am in my thirties) that when I was a baby they could never ever get me to sleep. And now I struggle with Insomnia as an adult. Here are a few doctor's I have researched who give some really great tips and reasons why some of us really struggle with getting a good night's rest.

I found great info from the Sleep Foundation about Pain and sleep. The Sleep Foundation found through numerous studies that problems with sleeplessness caused by pain can often be prevented with appropriate strategies.

Sources of pain can come from lower back pain- which results in waking up in the middle of the night, resulting in a lighter, less restorative sleep. Some reasons for lower back pain could be from the way you are sleeping. One way to prevent lower back pain is change the way you are sleeping.

According to the Sleep Foundation, it is important to know what the issue is with your sleeping pattern, so you can perfect it and get a better night's sleep. When pain is a problem it can be a domino effect. One night of sleeping can turn into months of lack of sleep, depression, problems with work, and then in turn, more lack of sleep.

Some other triggers of back pain besides the position you are sleeping in can be Headaches, TMJ, Arthritis, Fibromyalgia, PMS, or Cancer.

The things you have control over are:

stopping caffeine
limit Alcohol, especially 2 hours before bed
avoid vigorous exercise at night
under supervision of a physician use pain killers, and sleep aids
practice relaxation techniques.

For me personally, I have found visual meditations when I go to sleep very relaxing and calming. I have been falling asleep with these cd's( Circle + Bloom) for a few months now.

Dr. Oz gives three examples of the way you may be sleeping.
1) Dead Man's Float- stomach sleeper
not such a great position for your back, also creating a hyper flex on your neck, and exerting pressure on you nerves and back. This also creates a pins and needle effect.

improve this position: do not use a head pillow and/or use a pillow under your hips

2) Soldier-back position.
this is a problem for breathing issues.

Improve this position: put pillows under your knees and under your lower back

3) Sleeping Beauty- side sleeper
this is the ideal position for great back support. Your back is slightly curled with your knees bent and arms folded.

to even better perfect this position: put a pillow between your knees and get a medium thick pillow for your head

A very interesting theory, by M.D. Kulreet Chaudhary, finds that it is crucial to fall asleep at around 10pm and stay asleep until 2am. Her research shows that 10pm to 2am is the peak for the most deep and restorative sleep you can get through the entire day. After 2pm if you wake up, the later the hour gets, the lighter more superficial sleep you get.

Here is the scientific reason: The Pineal Gland. I never hear much about this part of the brain. Very interesting stuff.

The Pineal Gland receives info from the sun through your eyes via the optic nerve. As the sun sets, the Pineal Gland is able to sense the change in light transmitted through your eyes and it begins to secrete a hormone called melatonin, to prepare your body for sleep.

This is very interesting to me, because I swear by Melatonin, a natural sleeping aid. I also wonder how living in an area where there is no sun can affect your sleep?

As for us Women and sleep issues:
Dr Oz gives great info on what we should be aware of:

2 out of 3 women face issues with sleep quantity and quality. This creates weight gain, long-term memory issues, and increased blood pressure.

Here is his list to help us girls:

again limit alcohol
turn off the lights in your home around 8..to work with the hypothalamus and the Pineal gland
environment- keep your thermostat at 65 degrees. If you get cold, just throw on some more blankets
extra time- do not use the snooze button- snooze button is only ten minutes, and it takes 60minutes to get a restorative sleep.

Thank you for writing to express your support for the "Safe Chemicals Act of 2010." I appreciate hearing your thoughts about this legislation, and I welcome the opportunity to respond.

I agree that the United States must take a close look at reforming our nation's chemical regulatory system to protect vulnerable populations, especially children, from potentially toxic chemicals.

On April 14, 2011, Senator Frank Lautenberg (D-NJ) introduced the "Safe Chemicals Act of 2011" (S. 847), which would require testing of the safety of all industrial chemicals. Under current policy, the burden of proof lies with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to prove that a chemical is unsafe rather than on the chemical company to show that it is safe. This legislation would shift that responsibility to industry by requiring manufacturers and processors to test chemicals and submit data to EPA proving the safety of chemicals in order for them to remain in or enter the marketplace.

You may be interested to know that on January 25, 2011, I introduced the "Ban Poisonous Additives Act of 2011" (S. 136), which would ban the use of Bisphenol A (BPA) in baby bottles, sippy cups, infant formula, and baby food containers. BPA is a hormone disrupting chemical and is linked to harmful health effects like cancer, diabetes, heart disease, and early puberty. I have become especially concerned with the effects this chemical may have on babies and children, who are most at risk because of their smaller size and stage of development.

Please know that I share your concerns and will keep your thoughts in mind should the "Safe Chemicals Act of 2011" or similar legislation to modernize and strengthen our nation's chemical regulatory system come to a vote in the Senate.

I hated PE in Junior High and High School, But when we went to parks, and just had a good time with friends, running on the grass, in the sand, and up hiking trails, the smells, views, and the beauty of the parks brought me to another world.
