Put that Cigarette Out!

Join The Futon Shop Today and put out that cigarette!
May 31, 2011 is World No Tobacco Day!

The Futon Shop's mission is to every day make a difference in the environment, our earth’s soil, water, air and for countless living things. Simply by going organic when you purchase a new organic futon couch, organic futon mattress, and sofa bed and in what you wear, sleep on, wash and dry with, and what you consume can lead to helping replenish our planet and safeguard its future abundance. Until about 50 years ago, cotton-growing mainly involved sustainable techniques: it did not permanently deplete resources or create a health hazard. Today, however, the pesticides used on 'conventional' cotton increasingly threaten people, wildlife and the environment. Most pesticides were originally developed as toxic nerve agents during WWII and it is no wonder they have been linked to many forms of cancers.

With Today being No tobacco Day, lets encourage our friends and family who smoke, to not put toxic agents in their bodies today!

Tobacco's toll on human life

  • The tobacco epidemic kills nearly 6 million people each year, of whom:
    • more than 5 million are users and ex users
    • more than 600 000 are nonsmokers exposed to second-hand smoke

  • After high blood pressure, tobacco use is the biggest contributor to the epidemic of noncommunicable diseases — such as heart attack, stroke, cancer and emphysema — which accounts for 63% of deaths
  • Smokers are more susceptible to certain communicable diseases, such as tuberculosis and pneumonia
  • No consumer product kills as many people and as needlessly as does tobacco. It killed 100 million people in the 20th century. Unless we act, it could kill up to 1 billion people in the 21st. All of these deaths will have been entirely preventable

Friday Futon Fun

The Futon Shop's Friday News:

Save some energy and electricity this summer and have your kids and teens read some of these books from these lists!

I can not believe by reading this article that not one disposable diaper has been disposed...EVER!! This article talks about research being done with Oyster Mushrooms to start the dirty job!

Daniel Hernandez of HuffingtonPOST writes about the devastating tornadoes this year:
"American city the way Joplin, Missouri was hit last Sunday, we will remember this as the deadliest tornado season in modern history. At least 505 people have been killed by tornadoes this year, only 14 less than the record 519 who fell victim in 1953. And it's only May."

Does anyone have the answer of why this is happening at such a devastating rate?

huffingtonpost
has a great post about Green furniture week in New York.

Facts You Can Sleep On

Did you know May is Sleep month?

Here are a few statistics and important research facts that The Futon Shop takes very seriously:

According to the Huffingtonpost.com here are the best positions to sleep:
1) back and side( both are best for support of your neck and back)- side is best for pregnant women
2) stomach is worst for support of your neck and back..and increases chances of wrinkles

Jane Brody of NYTIMES.COM there are many sleep challenges for teens and children:
1) According to the National Sleep Foundation, newborns should sleep 12 to 18 out of every 24( while gradually reduction to 12 to 14; toddler 1-3 should sleep 11 to 13 hours for preschoolers who are 3 to 5 should sleep 10 to 11, and school children ages 5- 10 should sleep 10 to 11 hours. Teenagers need more hours than adults, about 8 to 9 hours of sleep
2) in one study in Brody's report, 90% of teenagers reporting sleeping less than nine hours a night. And 10% said they were sleeping less than 6 hours a night.
3) teenagers are labeled, "walking zombies"

Sleep Savvy Journal, May/June 2011 asks Americans to join the Better Sleep Council's National campaign to stop the spread of zombieities!
sleep surveys show for Americans:
1) 39% get six hours or less sleep per night
2) 17% get less than five

According to Michael Siegal, of Gazette.com, he claims that a lack of sleep can create a number of health issues:
Effects of inadequate sleep for all ages:
A) Colon Cancer
B) Weight issues
C) Lack Of Cognitive Abilities
D) Diabetes and Heart Disease
E) Depression
F) Risk of accident

One of my favorite sources for this issue is from Julie Scelfo of the NYtimes.com, in her article:
The Stuffing Dreams are Made of?
1) NO government agency regulates the labeling of mattresses as "organic" or "natural".
2) through mislabeling..there are misleading and vague info being passed along
3) Debra Lynn Dadd, author and blogger of Clearwater, Fla., if you are interested in organic food, you may want to find info on the greater exposure to toxic substances in household products like your mattress, since you spend a third of your life in bed!
4) California became the first state to ban the sales of mattresses with phthalates for use by children. and Federally the law became effective to forbid the use of three types of phthalates in products for children, including mattresses.
5) cotton and wool are natural and renewable materials, but most are grown with insecticides. and treated with chemical fertilizers/

These articles are so important to The Futon Shop, because we pride ourselves in specializing and manufacturing cotton and wool that are 100% organic and chemically free.

Small spaces, big dreams!

Ways to design a room and save space!
There is never a harder time when you move into a space where you need a sofabed for guests and there is just not enough space. Here are a few tips on making it work.

Loveseat are smaller couches than doubles or queens and still do the job with sitting two people and if you buy a futon, it can make into a bed as well. Loveseats are great if you do not have a lot of wall space. Usually loveseats are wall spaces smaller than 70 inches. If you do have plenty of wall space but need that wall space for a desk or shelving, the loveseat is very handy.

2) Go Modern: No arms
The modern look is very popular and a clean look. A frame without arms will save a good 4 to 15 inches along the wall.

3) Wallhugger sofabeds
Strata makes doubles, queens, and loveseats in wallhugger form. This means, you can purchase a futon and open it in one step. Normally when you buy a futon you have to move the entire couch away from the wall, but with a wallhugger you just lift the seat section and you have bed.

U.S. Should Sell More Free Trade Products

“You must be the change you wish to see in the world”
- MAHATMA GANDHI

The Futon Shop and other companies around the nation are finding their sales have spiked since promoting more products with Free Trade Principles. You do not have to search any longer. Just go to your neighboring Starbucks shop around the corner, or San Francisco Based futon retailer, The Futon Shop, to support Free Trade. May is World Free Trade month and with San Francisco being a popular city with characteristics of equality and open-minded citizens, it is no wonder it is one of the top contributers in 2008 as the leading cities in America that promotes and sells Free Trade products.

The Futon Shop, based in San Francisco since 1976, is proud to be part of the nation’s strongest Fair Trade legislation in the country. San Francisco joined the Bay Area Trade Coalition that began in 2005, with neighboring cities such as Oakland, and Berkeley, educating consumers about the benefits of Fair Trade.

American companies have made a difference with Fair Trade consciousness. Fair Trade started in the 1940’s when a few small North American and European organizations reached out to poverty stricken communities to help them sell their handicrafts to well-off markets. What most people know of the fair trade began in the coffee company because of a fictional character, Max Havelaar, who was developed as an advocate for exploited coffee pickers. This led to a global effort not just with coffee, but with crafts, linens, and a multitude of products being made around the world. The goal behind Fair trade is to treat all farmers and employees with equal rights, while at the same time promoting environmental sustainability.

Companies like Starbucks and The Futon Shop are handing out the opportunity to consumers around the globe to make a difference and buy products that feel good to purchase, leaving a positive feeling while acquiring in line with their ideals and beliefs. The Futon Shop manufactures and purchases from other vendors with the same principle as the Free Trade coalition. The Futon Shop has appealed to consumers who have been looking for products that use natural sustainable products as well as chemical free and organic mattresses and accessories. The Futon Shop not only uses green ingredients for their mattresses and futons, but all their vendors live by the same principle by using sustainable wood for their futon frames and platform beds.

One of America’s leading Organic manufacturer, The Futon Shop supports Fair Trade by standing by the same principles. The four important benefits of Fair Trade are stable prices, a Fair Trade premium, partnership, and empowerment of farmers and workers.

Sales have skyrocketed for The Futon Shop with their eco-friendly lamps. Eangee, sells certified Free Trade and organic lamps of all sizes and shapes. They are based in a small family-owned manufacturing firm in the Philipines, located just outside the capital city of Manila, where they make all the lighting in an organic lamp collection. Many people travel to Manila from the provinces to find work and send money back home to loved ones. Not only does Eangee home design, one of The Futon Shop’s vendors, make sure that the workers are provided strong living wages, but they also provide free quality housing, so that the workers can use more of their wages to help their families.

Another company that has helped The Futon Shop grow their line of Organic and Free Trade products is through their certified Fair Trade Sleep and Beyond line. Sleep and Beyond specialize in Organic Merino Wool Products in the Kyrgyz Republic. Being known for it’s Colorado size and the world’s largest glaciers, with only populating 5 million people, Kyrgyz has succeeded in creating their products in an eco-friendly factory.

One of the first big companies in America that promoted Fair Trade was Starbucks in 2000 when they led a huge campaign with their goal to make all of it’s specialty and coffee brands Fair trade certified. Thanks to companies like Starbucks and other coffee companies around the globe, according to Fair Trade USA, coffee imports have climbed from 78,000 pounds certified in 1998 to 108 million pounds certified in 2010.

Global Exchange is another leading company with stores based in America that promote Fair Trade. Global Exchange and other companies supporting Fair Trade promotes and empowers small scale farmers in developing countries. Thanks to The Futon Shop and other Free Trade companies that have helped more than 1.2 milllion producer and workers in 58 developing countries now benefiting from global fair trade sales.

A Bed Time Story

The Futon Shop is featuring Free Trade Vendors this month, so here is a letter we received from the company. It has reminded me of why what we sleep has the most importance for our health.

Dear Suzanne,

We have always been doing extensive research on amazing benefits of natures created fibers. To this day, we were not able to find any better or healthier alternatives for human beings to sleep on or under than the two winning combinations, wool and cotton. People these days are much more educated and ready for healthier lifestyle. After all, statistics don't lie and, according to American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology, there are more than 50 million Americans alone affected by one or more type of allergic diseases, that is nearly every 7th person! Approximately 70 million Americans have chronic sleep disorders. There has got to be an explanation for those devastating stats other than the weather or genetics.

People spend 1/3 of their lives sleeping and probably another 2/3 wishing they were asleep, because the fact is, most of us do not get appropriate amount of rest no matter what age category we fall into. Everyone has got to go to sleep at night and will have to face the reality that, depending on the materials they sleep on or under, should determine how well-rested or miserable they wake up in the morning. Now, if we sleep under synthetic fibers (most people do) which do not breath naturally nor wick away the moisture and a person does sweat one pint of water on average, that leads to a perfect moisture environment for dust mites to survive in, and there comes one of the reasons for allergies. The bottom line is, in short-term synthetics are cheaper, YES, long-term will cost double, triple or even more due to the side-effects. Natural fibers may cost a little more, however at the end, can anyone put a price tag on health?

There's lots of people in this world who spend so much time watching their health that they haven't the time to enjoy it.

~Josh Billings

Hot off the Press: Dangers in Crib Mattresses

Focus on Organic Mattresses

Dangerous Toxins in Crib Mattresses are Harming America's Children: Learn How to Protect Your Children

According to FDA and groundbreaking research, traditional crib mattresses that are being sold online and in stores around America have hidden dangers that harm children. Leading companies like The Futon Shop give consumers a better night sleep by empowering parents to be able to make healthy and organic choices for their families.
A new mother’s job is to protect her baby. An expectant mother keeps their baby warm
and safe for 9 months, but how does a mother keep their baby safe from hidden dangers when setting up a nursery? The crib mattress is one of the most important purchases parents make, as babies sleep in their crib for the first two years. It's imperative that consumer are educated before choosing a crib mattress in order to protect their family from the many hidden dangers.
Pesticides not detected by the naked eye in non organic mattress are poisonous and lethal to children and adults. Consumers confusion on Organic practices and understanding labeling makes it difficult choosing the right crib mattress. According to Suzanne Diamond, cotton buyer for The Futon Shop one of the Nation’s leading Organic mattress and crib mattress manufacturer, "as a manufacturer, I have the control of what goes into my mattresses and I choose organically." Suzanne's crib mattresses are exclusively made with only the best organic material, which protects families from harmful chemicals. The Futon Shop's cotton is grown without toxic chemicals and pesticides, making the world a healthier place. In order for cotton to be certified organic farmers rely on crop rotation that replenish and maint
Fields of Organic Cotton
ain soil fertility while botanical means are used to control pests and weeds. The USDA only certifies cotton as organic when a field is pesticide-free for three years prior to planting. According to the Organic Trade Association, Dr. Chensheng (Alex) Lu of the Department of Environmental Health at the Harvard School of Public Health has found that less pesticide exposure during pregnancy means less risks to your babies for a variety of diseases that can manifest years later.
There are Organic mattresses and crib mattresses online that appear to be labeled and designed safe for your child, but this does not mean they are. Many companies and websites have classified their product “Green ” or “Organic”, but when you look a little closer, you will find that companies are using deceptive green labeling that misleads customers. Every year there are hundreds of babies that get sick or die from dangers in toys and mattresses. According to Forbes, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) recalled 44 toys in fiscal year 2010, ended Sept. 30, and several more in October and November.
The FDA and Consumer Product Safety Commission have issued general warnings regarding the use of phthalates and their dangers to our health, yet the PVC surfaces of baby mattresses still contain phthalates.Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC). Barry A. Chief Engineer, G.E.M. Testing & Engineering Labs complete a Toxicity Analysis of Baby Mattresses in which he found all plastics are not created equal. The "vinyl" surface typically used in baby mattresses is actually polyvinyl chloride (also known as PVC). Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) is made from vinyl chloride, which is a combination of petroleum (ethylene) and chlorine. This particular plastic is far more toxic than the plastic bag you might use to pack your lunch. The waterproof organic cotton crib mattress protectors offered by companies similar to The Futon Shop containing no harmful metals or VOC.
Groundbreaking research from Dr. Jim Sprott, OBE, a New Zealand scientist and chemist, states with certainty that crib death is caused by toxic gases, which can be generated from a baby's mattress. Chemical compounds containing phosphorus, arsenic and antimony have been added to mattresses as fire retardants and for other purposes since the early 1950's. A fungus that commonly grows in bedding can interact with these chemicals to create poisonous gases (Richardson 1994).
The Futon Shop home is San Francisco, California where hand make premium futon sofa beds, organic futons, organic crib mattresses, covers and organic bedding are made since 1976. The Futon Shop takes Organic living from the guest room into your baby’s Nursery seriously with over 2 million mattresses sold, their Organic line of futons, every day mattresses, and crib mattresses are their most popular products. Often customers come in not really knowing what is Organic versus a traditional mattress. Basically the answer is no pesticides, no chemicals, and no off gassing from polyurethane.

Celebrating Cinco de Mayo

Feliz Cinco de Mayo to you!

Today marks a special day for the Mexican People. A way that I have
always associated Cinco de Mayo is through food and childhood tradition. When I was a child in elementary School, every year on May Fifth, we would all get so excited. We would all get the class decorated in Mexican colors and we would set up all the Mexican dishes. But the best part of course was the Pinata. All the candy would get every where and all us kids would run to the middle for our favorite flavored bubble gum. After stuffing ourselves with delicious guacamole, tacos, chips and dip, we would all sit down and learn about The Mexican Culture. These are great memories of mine.

Now that I am older my friends and family at The Futon Shop get together for BBQ's, but I like to use more Organic versions of my favorite dishes.
